give user option to use non-admin merge tool (CM web client) Hot

by Joshua Trosclair on January 13, 2016

Not every user has admin rights to their machine. There should be an option to download two kinds of merge tools... one that requires admin privileges, and the other that does not.

  • The latest merge tool in CM 14 outdoes the one in CM 12 in functionality, but is unusable by users without admin rights on their machine; they cannot run the installer. I propose that Serena provide the user with two merge tool options. The merge tool that doesn't require admin rights could be a free one with basic functionality; I don't expect it to be as good as the merge tool that you need admin rights to install. That's a given.

The cost of Dimensions CM will rise if these users have to get get admin rights on their machines, which will make CM a less competitive option for current and future users on my network. There are already a few stakeholders who have visibility on the issue. On my particular government network, it costs much more money to have a machine with "developer/admin" rights than it is to have a less privileged machine.

If Serena doesn't budge on giving two merge tool options for download with the "native tools" download, I am asking that Serena provide a way for 3rd party merge tools to work with the Dimensions CM web client with thorough documentation. If such documentation does exist, Serena support was not able to find it and neither was I.

I am CM 14.1.0.4 and the issue persists. Serena support tells me CM 14.2 fixes the issue. Will have to upgrade to that version to find out

Hi Joshua, this was reported in L3R03768 and I'm pleased to say resolved in the 14.1.0.2 release. Since this release Admin Privileges are *not* required in order to install the merge tool from CM web client.
